Internet Filtering If your children are using the
net you will want to make sure they see only portions of it that are suitable
for them. The most common way of controlling internet access is to install
Internet filtering software. Many software programs exist which aid parents
in controlling the Internet content available to their children. Most of
these programs perform one or more of the following functions: ·
Block access to adult sites,
rate sites based on adult content (pornography, violence/ profanity, militant
extremists, gambling, drug culture, etc.) ·
Establish time controls for
individual users (for example, blocking usage after a particular time at
night, or during established homework times) ·
Log surfing activities (allowing
parents to see which sites a child has visited). The top three programs are Net
Nanny, Safe Eyes and CYBER SITTER. Other popular programs
include: McAfee Parental Control, Cyper Patrol and In View.
Most of these parental control
tools & programs can be configured by the parent to filter out internet
sites that contain unsuitable material. Some can also be configured to
prevent children from revealing information about themselves such as their
name, address, or telephone number or even monitor chat.
For children to surf the web,
there are colorful browsers available with excellent security features. These
browsers allow parents to choose suitable Web sites and prevent children from
accessing undesirable sites. They are colourful, fun, easy to install and use
& are excellent for parental control & filtering. However, just installing
software is not enough. Like everything else, internet usage is also best
modified to our kind of lifestyle by inculcating usage, behaviour and values.
